Information We Collect
We collect information you provide directly, information created through your use of Gulo, and information from connected services.
- Account information, such as your email address, sign-in method (email code, Sign in with Apple, or Sign in with Google), and login status.
- Profile information, such as display name, username, birthday, gender, profile photo, city/state location, and bio.
- Activity information, such as runs, walks, hikes, titles, times, locations, routes, distance, pace, elevation, participants, and completion status.
- Location information when you allow it, including map centering, nearby activity discovery, activity pin placement, and optional one-time current-location sharing in chat. Gulo only requests location access while the app is in use and never requests background or "always" location access.
- Chat and community information, such as group and activity messages, chat membership, group descriptions, reports, blocks, follow requests, and notifications.
- Photos you choose to upload from your device's photo library for your profile photo, group photo, or activity banner. Gulo does not access your camera directly and does not perform facial recognition or other biometric processing on uploaded photos.
- Search and map information used briefly to return Google Places autocomplete results and place details. Gulo does not store your typed map searches as search history.
- Basic technical information needed to operate the app, secure accounts, debug errors, and prevent abuse.
- Product analytics and crash/error diagnostics, collected through PostHog and Sentry. This includes an internal account identifier, basic device and app-usage information, error and performance data, and, for a sample of sessions (all sessions that end in an error, and a small random sample of others), a replay of on-screen app activity used only to diagnose bugs and crashes. This information is used to keep Gulo working reliably and to understand how the app is used; it is not used for advertising, and it is not sold or shared with data brokers.
Gulo does not collect health or fitness data from Apple Health, Google Fit, or similar platforms, and does not use any advertising or data-broker software development kits, and does not use analytics for advertising or cross-app tracking purposes.
How We Use Information
- To create and manage your account and profile.
- To show activities on maps, in activity lists, and in profile history.
- To provide map search, autocomplete, activity pin placement, and location-based activity discovery.
- To help users follow each other, join activities, and participate in group and activity chats.
- To send authentication codes, notifications, and service messages.
- To protect user safety, process reports, enforce blocks, and moderate content.
- To maintain, troubleshoot, secure, and improve Gulo.
Location
Gulo uses location only when needed for app features you use, such as centering maps, finding nearby activities, creating activity pins, and optionally sharing your current location one time as an in-app chat pin. Gulo does not provide live or background location tracking. Users under 18 cannot use one-time current-location sharing in chat.
How Information Is Shared
- Your profile, activity, map, history, and participation information may be visible to other users according to app privacy, follow, block, and activity visibility controls.
- Messages are visible to members of the relevant group or activity chat.
- Reports may be reviewed by Gulo for safety and moderation.
- We use service providers to operate Gulo, including Supabase for authentication, database, storage, and functions; Resend for transactional email; Google for Google sign-in, maps, and place search; Apple for Sign in with Apple; and PostHog and Sentry for product analytics and crash/error diagnostics.
- We may disclose information if required by law, to protect rights and safety, or to investigate abuse.
- Gulo does not sell your personal information, and does not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined under the CCPA.
Public and Semi-Public Content
Profile photos, group photos, and activity banner photos are stored at public asset URLs so they can load quickly across the app. Discovery of those URLs is still controlled by Gulo's app and database permissions (for example, activity visibility, follow status, and group membership), but you should assume that any photo you upload could be viewed or saved by someone who has legitimate access to it in the app. Only upload content you are comfortable being seen by other users you interact with.
Age Requirements and Children's Privacy
Gulo is intended for users age 13 and older and is not directed to children under 13. Gulo does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13; the app blocks account creation for users who enter a birthday under age 13 and automatically deletes the information submitted during that signup attempt. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information, contact runwithgulo@gmail.com.
Users ages 13 to 17 may use Gulo with additional safety restrictions, including no one-time current-location sharing in chat. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your teen should not be using Gulo, contact us and we will assist with account removal.
Your Privacy Choices
- You can edit your profile, activity, notification, and privacy preferences in the app under Settings.
- You can report content or block users directly in the app.
- You can delete your account at any time, directly in the app, without contacting support. See "Account and Data Deletion" below.
Account and Data Deletion
You can permanently delete your Gulo account yourself, at any time, from inside the app: open Settings > Delete account, review the summary of what will be removed, and confirm. Deleting your account permanently removes your profile, your owned activities and groups, your uploaded photos, and your participation history, and signs you out immediately. This does not require emailing support or submitting a separate request.
A few limited records are retained after account deletion for safety and legal reasons rather than deleted outright: content in shared group or activity chats is retained as anonymized history (your name is removed and replaced with a generic label) so conversations remain coherent for other participants, and safety reports you were involved in are retained as anonymized moderation records. Group content you created as an admin (but do not own) may remain with the group, attributed to no one, rather than being deleted.
If you cannot access the app (for example, you lost access to your device) or want to request deletion of specific data without deleting your whole account, email runwithgulo@gmail.com from the email address on your account. We may ask you to verify account ownership before processing the request. Full instructions, including what is and is not deleted, are also available at runwithgulo.com/account-deletion.
Your California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident, the CCPA gives you the following rights with respect to your personal information, subject to certain exceptions:
- Right to know what personal information we have collected, used, disclosed, and (if applicable) sold or shared about you.
- Right to delete personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions (see "Account and Data Deletion" above).
- Right to correct inaccurate personal information we maintain about you.
- Right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. Gulo does not sell or share personal information, so no opt-out is necessary.
- Right to non-discrimination for exercising any of these rights.
In the past 12 months, we have collected the following categories of personal information, as defined under the CCPA:
- Identifiers (email address, username, device/account identifiers).
- Customer records information (birthday, gender, profile details).
- Commercial information (activity participation and hosting history).
- Internet or network activity (basic app usage and diagnostic information).
- Geolocation data (approximate or precise location, only as described above).
- Audio, electronic, visual, or similar information (photos you upload).
- Inferences: none. Gulo does not build advertising or marketing profiles about you.
We use and disclose these categories only for the business and operational purposes described in "How We Use Information" and "How Information Is Shared" above, not for cross-context behavioral advertising. To exercise a CCPA right, email runwithgulo@gmail.com from the email address on your account; we will verify your identity before responding and will respond within the timeframe required by law. You may also use an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf.
Accessibility
We aim to design Gulo to be usable by people with disabilities, including support for platform accessibility features such as screen readers and Dynamic Type, and by respecting reduced-motion preferences. If you encounter an accessibility barrier in the app or on this website, tell us at runwithgulo@gmail.com so we can address it.
Data Retention
We keep information for as long as needed to provide Gulo, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce our terms, and protect community safety. Activity chats may expire after the related activity window, while reports, blocks, and safety records may be retained in anonymized form as needed for moderation, even after an account is deleted.
Security
We use technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect user information, including encryption in transit and access controls enforced at the database level. No system is perfect, and you should use care when sharing personal information or meeting people you met through Gulo in person.
Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy as Gulo changes. If changes are significant, we will provide notice in a reasonable way, such as in the app or on this website, and update the "Last updated" date above.
