Gulo is designed to help people create, discover, join, and discuss running, walking, and hiking activities. If you have questions, contact us at runwithgulo@gmail.com.
Information We Collect
We collect information you provide directly, information created through your use of Gulo, and information from connected services.
- Account information, such as your email address, authentication method, and login status.
- Profile information, such as display name, username, birthday, profile photo, city/state location, and bio.
- Activity information, such as runs, walks, hikes, titles, times, locations, routes, distance, pace, elevation, participants, and completion status.
- Location information when you allow it, including map centering, nearby activity discovery, activity pin placement, and optional one-time current-location sharing in chat.
- Chat and community information, such as messages, chat membership, reports, blocks, follow requests, and notifications.
- Photos you choose to upload or connect to your profile.
- Strava information if you connect Strava, including your athlete identifier, authorization tokens, and minimum account-link details needed to maintain or revoke the connection.
- Basic technical information needed to operate the app, secure accounts, debug errors, and prevent abuse.
How We Use Information
- To create and manage your account and profile.
- To show activities on maps, in activity lists, and in profile history.
- To help users follow each other, join activities, and participate in activity chats.
- To send authentication codes, notifications, and service messages.
- To protect user safety, process reports, enforce blocks, and moderate content.
- To maintain, troubleshoot, and improve Gulo.
Strava Connection
Strava data is collected directly from Strava after you approve Gulo through Strava's OAuth authorization screen. Gulo uses the Strava connection only to maintain your connection and as one private factor in Gulo's own verified-status algorithm, together with Gulo activity participation. Gulo does not display Strava activity data, routes, performance stats, or Strava-derived analytics to other Gulo users. Gulo does not use Strava data for runner matching, targeted advertising, AI, or combined analytics with other users' data.
Public Gulo activities, completed maps, and Gulo dashboard statistics are based on Gulo-created and host-confirmed activity records, not Strava activity records. You can manage the connection under Edit Profile > Connected services. The connection screen lets you revoke Gulo's authorization and permanently delete Gulo's cached Strava data. Gulo confirms successful deletion in the app. You can also revoke access through your Strava account; Gulo processes Strava deauthorization notices and deletes the associated cache.
Location
Gulo uses location only when needed for app features you use, such as centering maps, finding nearby activities, creating activity pins, and optionally sharing your current location one time as an in-app chat pin. Gulo does not provide live background tracking. Users under 18 cannot use one-time current-location sharing in chat.
How Information Is Shared
- Your profile, activity, map, history, and participation information may be visible to other users according to app privacy, follow, block, and activity visibility controls.
- Messages are visible to members of the relevant direct or activity chat.
- Reports may be reviewed by Gulo for safety and moderation.
- We use service providers to operate Gulo, including Supabase for authentication, database, storage, and functions; Resend for transactional email; Google for Google sign-in; and Strava if you connect Strava.
- Strava data is not disclosed to other Gulo users or third parties except infrastructure providers processing it on Gulo's behalf to operate the private connection.
- We may disclose information if required by law, to protect rights and safety, or to investigate abuse.
Age Requirements
Gulo is intended for users age 13 and older. Users under 13 may not create an account. Users ages 13 to 17 may use Gulo with conservative safety restrictions, including no one-time current-location sharing in chat.
Your Choices
- You can edit your profile in the app.
- You can disconnect Strava in the app, which revokes authorization and deletes Gulo's cached Strava data. You can also manage authorization from your Strava account.
- You can report content or block users.
- You can request account deletion by emailing runwithgulo@gmail.com from the email address on your account.
Data Retention
We keep information for as long as needed to provide Gulo, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce our terms, and protect community safety. Activity chats may expire after the related activity window, while reports, blocks, and safety records may be retained as needed for moderation.
Strava authorization tokens and the minimum account-link identifier are retained only while you keep Strava connected. Any cached Strava data is owner-only, kept only as needed to operate the private connection, and deleted when you disconnect or revoke access. Strava may monitor and use information about Gulo's API usage for its business purposes under the Strava API Policy.
Security
We use technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect user information. No system is perfect, and you should use care when sharing personal information or meeting people in person.
Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy as Gulo changes. If changes are significant, we will provide notice in a reasonable way, such as in the app or on this website.
